Reworked – Indian Cinema

The Indian Film Industry has seen so many changes in its time!! What did these years bring to the Indian cinema?

The hero – From bulky mustached Raj Kapoor to angry young man Amitabh Bacchan to heavily chest haired Anil Kapoor to lover boys Aamir Khan and Sharukh Khan to six pack flaunting John Abraham or Hrithik Roshan (everyone actually!)

The heroine – From tragedy queen Meena Kumari to epitomising all things good Mala Sinha and Madhu Bala to fighting against evil Meenakshi Sheshadri to Priyanka Chopra breaking all rules for a successful career. Also there is Radhika Apte breaking the stereotypes.

The villain – From traditional smuggler and dacoit villains like Prem Chopra, Pran, Amrish Puri and Ajit to hero-kind villains like Saif and SRK and even Priyanka Chopra. And now there are films like Pink, where the villain is not a person from the film, but the society in itself.

The maa – From ‘rona dhona’ Nirupa Roy to ideal Reema Lagoo to Kirron Kher accepting her gay son to Dolly Ahluwalia drinking and dancing at weddings!

The item girl – From cabaret seductress to banjarans like Helen to teaser Choli Ke Peeche’s Madhuri Dixit to sexy Malaika and Katrina!

The comedian – From Johny Walker’s slapstick humour to Kishore Kumar’s Aankh Seedhi Lagi to Mehmood’s hilarious dialog delivery to Johny Lever’s facial expressions, and now to heroes like Akshay Kumar in Hera Pheri and Ajay Devgn in Bol Bacchan!

The friend – From side kicks like Mukri and Mehmood to Arshad Warsi as Circuit grabbing some of the best lines in the film!

The romance – From two flowers coming together to looking at each other’s eyes to pre marital sex and live in relationshsips!

The music – From gazals to classical melodies to disco to forgettable numbers of the 90’s. The decades of 21st century sees songs from Sonu Nigam and Arijit Singh and Yo Yo Honey Singh and Baadshah in the same film!

The dialogues – From melodrama, “Kutte main tera khoon pee jaunga” to quirky, “Arrey ye to udta hua teer gaand mein le liya bhai saab aapne..” My recent favourite from Pink is, “‘Na’ sirf ek shabd nahi….apne aap mein ek poora vakya hai.”
